PPPC Scholarship Program »Who do you know who is pursuing their degree and could use a $1500 boost? Your daughter, nephew, or co-op student perhaps? There are fourteen $1500 scholarships to be given out this year to full-time students studying marketing, entrepreneurship, graphic arts or business administration. Please share this gift of education. “Your generosity and concern in the commitment of helping to build futures for students like me is inspirational,” says Kristina Wiech, a recipient of a PPPC scholarship bursary. It’s only one of many compliments we receive from recipients. And, for the PPPC, providing financial support for students like Kristina is the just the beginning. The pillars of this program are leadership, education and growth. Kristina applied for scholarship money so she could concentrate more on her studies and less on having to raise the funds to support them. While education is a foundation for a thriving economy, for Kristina, pursuing her degree might have remained a dream had it not been for this program. This $3.9-billion promotional industry in Canada continues to thrive as the only tangible, one-to-one communication medium. PPPC is taking a leadership role, not only in changing individuals’ lives, but also in changing the way in which our medium is taught. The message about promotional products, often seen as giveaways with little or no measurable ROI, needs to change. This medium is powerful. Under the education pillar, PPPC annually offers 14 scholarships worth $1500 to aspiring professionals studying sales, marketing, entrepreneurship, business or programs related to our industry. Students must be studying full time and make application to the scholarship committee who enthusiastically review the submissions. Since its inception four years ago, 30 students have appreciatively received their cheques. Students across the country have a standing invitation to attend PPPC chapter events and professional development sessions at the annual PPPC conference in Toronto in January. Further, PPPC ambassadors visit colleges and universities across the country to enlighten students and faculty on the depth of the industry. Creating this two-way dialogue is critical to accomplishing growth. We’re seeing growth on many levels. What’s most exciting is the new talent pool we’re bringing into the industry as a result of communicating with colleges and universities. We’re discovering motivated individuals who, ultimately, could be great assets to our diverse membership base. The scholarship program itself is taking traction; in fact, three members have purchased corporate scholarships of $1500 under the PPPC umbrella and Atlantic Canada became the first regional chapter to develop a chapter scholarship. Regional chapters are encouraged to host “student events” to not only generate applications, but also introduce students to the world of promotional products. The financial gifts are growing; however, there hasn’t been one year in which all scholarship funds were entirely spent. Who do you know who is studying sales, marketing, business or media arts and could use a $1500 boost? Applications are available online at www.pppc.ca (http://www.pppc.ca/). Applicants must complete the application and submit it with a letter of endorsement from a faculty member, an official transcript and a 1500-word essay outlining how this scholarship will support their goals. The next deadline for application is May 31, 2012. For more information on the PPPC Scholarship Program, visit www. pppc.ca or contact Chantal Fontaine: Chantal@pppc.ca (mailto:%3Ca%20href=)">Chantal@pppc.ca (mailto:Chantal@pppc.ca). Child and Youth Protection »Dear Parents, Scouters, Partners and Supporters, For 104 years, Scouts Canada has been committed to the healthy development of young people in every community across our country. Children and youth in Scouts gain invaluable experiences and skills that help them develop into capable, confident and well-rounded individuals who are better prepared for success in the world. For these same reasons, nothing is more important than the wellbeing of the children and youth with whom we work so closely and whose lives we seek to influence for the better. Their safety and health is a solemn obligation that we do our best to meet with great care and concern. That is why we strive to ensure that our child and youth protection policies are the most rigorous of any youth services organization in the country. Today, more than ever, great care is necessary to ensure the children and youth in Scouting are protected from those who would do harm, and "vigilance" is our watchword. In recent weeks, our children and youth protection policies – both current and past – have come under significant media scrutiny, and Scouts Canada has been direct and forthright when responding to the media's questions. Although sometimes challenging, this scrutiny has also given us the opportunity to take a wider look at our full range of youth protection programs and policies. It has also led us to reflect on past examples of wrongdoing by those who have violated their obligations to our movement and to the youth entrusted to their care. We want Scouts, their parents and the public to know the full extent of our commitment to providing a safe and nurturing environment. And we want them to know our commitment is complete and heartfelt. Therefore, the Board of Governors has asked me to share the following actions with all of you. First and most important, Scouts Canada, and I personally, wish to apologize sincerely and deeply to any and all former Scouts who suffered harm at the hands of those who abused the trust and responsibility they had gained as volunteer Leaders in our movement. Our sincere efforts to prevent such crimes have not always succeeded and we are sorry for that and saddened at any resulting harm. Our most profound sympathies extend to all victims and their families. Second, as we have said many times publicly, Scouts Canada has a very strict policy with respect to reporting allegations of abuse: We suspend the Leader in question immediately to ensure there is no further contact with children and youth; We refer the matter in full to police and child protection services. We cooperate completely with the police in their investigations; Any information that Scouts Canada obtains relating to abuse allegations is communicated to police. To our knowledge, there has not been deviation from this policy by Scouts Canada. Nevertheless, we want the public to have complete confidence that every record of abuse has been handled properly and shared with police. To this end, we have asked KPMG's Forensic group to conduct a thorough, arms-length review of all records held by Scouts Canada on Leader suspensions or terminations that are related to abuse. We will confirm the integrity of our process and ensure that no exceptions to our approach exist – even in historical examples. This work should be completed by early in the New Year and we will make the results of KPMG's examination public. Third, we also want to ensure that our child and youth protection policies continue to set the highest possible standard. Therefore, we have asked Peter Dudding, CEO of the Child Welfare League of Canada to lead a third-party panel of experts in child and youth protection and safety. The panel will conduct a thorough and complete review of all our policies and procedures, and make recommendations on any additional measures that ensure they meet today's realities, and, to the best of our ability, that they anticipate the needs of tomorrow. The Panel's mandate will extend beyond advising on our child and youth protection policies to provide guidance on our training methods, curriculum and in-the-field implementation. Scouts Canada's commitment to the panel is ongoing and long-term and reaffirms our efforts towards continuous enhancement of our youth protection policies and procedures. We want to be certain that we are taking every possible action, now and in the future. We are also committed to sharing the findings of this review with all other youth services organizations in Canada. In closing, we want parents and the public to know that as an organization and as individual Scouters, we are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for their children. At our core, Scouts is about helping young people find their way forward, equipping them with the tools, abilities and self-esteem they need to be self-confident today – and leaders in their own communities tomorrow. It has been our mission for 104 years, and it is one we will continue to pursue with humility, energy and vigilance. We are only Leaders...... »We are only leaders - we are not experts – we are your next-door neighbours – we are not perfect, we are parents just like you. We don’t have any more spare time or energy than you do, we all work full time and juggle our families and our schedules and try to keep it all together as best we can. The only difference between us is that we believe passionately about what Scouting has to offer. So much so, that we contribute our time, our efforts and our talents to help our children - and your children - grow in Scouting. We complete authorization forms, budgets and records and fill our homes with boxes of paperwork you will never see. We are required to take 13-20 hours training in our first year as well as assist in planning meetings every month so we can meet our greatest challenge – providing a variety of programs and activities which meet the needs and interests of very individual boys and girls. We try to involve parents who want us to understand that they don’t have the time to drive on outings or help at meetings. We rejoice in the generosity of others. Sometimes we find ourselves going in too many directions – we run out of steam – we have memory lapses - communication lines break down – time slips by – but that doesn’t mean we don’t care. So many evenings we spend on the phone seeking help and advice from other leaders when disappointments or problems occur. “How do I hold my Scouts attention?”. “How do you cope with Scouts of different skills levels?” Our dining tables are covered in bits of rope, menus, permission forms and record cards for each and every member of the Group. A couple of them won’t show up and don’t think to call to let us know – sometimes we feel unappreciated. Yet these boys and girls can fill us with pride at their determination and accomplishments. Their smiles and laughter fill up a room, and when they say “thank you” it makes it all worthwhile. We help these boys and girls build relationships. Some struggle more than others. Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly…. All these traits are encouraged by the Scout Promise and Law – and sometimes we too must learn these lessons over and over again with the Scouts – but we are willing to keep learning. Please be patient if we appear distracted or frustrated or overwhelmed at times. Forgive us if we are not always the kind of Scout Leader you would be - if only you had the time. Instead, provide us with your encouragement – a kind word, a thank you – or offer us your help. Keep us always in your thoughts and prayers. We are, after all, only mentors…role models…leaders…volunteers who have made a Promise to give these young people, your children, the most precious gift we have to offer – the gift of time. AODA Customer Service Standard »As of January 1, 2012, new provincial legislation will come into effect, requiring not-for-profit organizations to meet a new Customer Service Accessibility Standard governing the provision of services to all Ontarians, particularly those with disabilities. This legislation requires each organization to provide all staff and volunteers with training specific to this Customer Service Standard. To ensure that Scouts Canada is prepared and able to provide programs and services in a manner that is accessible to all Ontarians, respecting the dignity and independence of people with disabilities, all staff and volunteers are legally obligated to complete AODA Training. Additionally, all staff and volunteers will need to read and gain an understanding of Scouts Canada's AODA Customer Service Accessibility Policy (http://www.scouts.ca/media-campaigner/Scouts-Canada-Accessible-Customer-Service-Policy.pdf). We do appreciate that you are being asked to complete this training during a busy time and that this may present challenges. Given the regulatory nature of this training, however, we ask for your timely cooperation to ensure that Scouts Canada remains compliant. We thank you, in advance, for your ongoing commitment and enthusiasm to Scouts Canada's current and future members. The AODA training will be available in two distinct formats: in person and online. Neither format involves a testing component. The online training will take approximately 45 minutes and can be accessed at the following address: www.scouts.ca/elearn (http://www.scouts.ca/elearn). We are also encouraging Groups to make use of their upcoming Group Committee/leadership meetings to provide the training face-to-face. Please contact your Group Commissioner or key contact for further information. You can also read the FAQs here (http://www.scouts.ca/media-campaigner/AODA_FAQ_LH.pdf). Thank you for your ongoing commitment to accessibility of Scouting for all Ontarians. Great Lakes Jambo 2012 »On behalf of the staff I would like to extend an invitation to all Scouts, Scouters, Guides and Guiders within the World Brotherhood of Scouting and Guiding to attend and be part of this wonderful Jamboree experience. The dates for this Jamboree of Fun, Challenge and Adventure are July 14 – 21, 2012. Great Lakes Jamboree, the longest continuous running Jambo in Ontario will be at Camp BEL at Dorchester near London Ontario!! Building on the great Program successes we had last Jambo, we are adding 4 new Villages for the youth and Leaders to enjoy. We have also modified a couple of the events based on the feedback from Leaders and Youth at last Jambo. When you read the full package you will notice that the hike program and canoe programs have been tweaked based on feedback and participation levels last year. The main on-site villages have also been modified to allow for more hands on time for each youth using the village. Brent and his team have modified the Brownsea challenge for older youth. We offer a full 5 nights of Subcamp program with 2 nights of camp wide program. There are repel towers, climbing wall, archery, rifle ranges, blacksmith forge, Leathercraft, handicraft, Dutch oven cooking, Bruce Trailhikes, canoe, Geocache adventure, macro pioneering, ScoutCraft Skills Village and much more. A Woodbadge Part 1 for Leaders will be offered as well as a separate Leader event area. Special Opening and Closing ceremonies will add to your Jamboree Adventure. Cost for the Jamboree is $235 / youth, $110 /leader, plus your troop registration fee. This includes everything except your food and how you get to the site and home again. We are always looking to maintain the price as low as possible while providing the best activities and experience for yourTroop. As a team, we feel this is still the best deal anywhere for your youth in the summer of 2012. Scouters, I urge you to read and share the details inside of this package with your youth to see how you and your Troop can have a GREAT summer Jamboree experience. We have grown in numbers for the last 3 Jamborees with 520 Scouts and Scouters attending 2010. This year we have as a goal, 600 on site. To get this 600 on site we allow 725 to register since we usually have about a 20% shrink from original numbers. Goderich Scouting groups »As many of you know, on August 21 Goderich was struck by a tornado that caused widespread devastation. Recovery projects are now underway, but it will be months, if not years before the community fully recovers. There are two Scouting groups in Goderich and as a result of the tornado, they are struggling to resume normal operations. Meeting places have been damaged and much of their group equipment has been lost. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts and their leaders have had their homes damaged and destroyed. Things we take for granted such as uniforms, books and sleeping bags, have been lost by many members. Everyday life for them is anything but normal right now and as beneficial as it would be to resume regular scouting meetings, it is proving difficult. Bluewater Area is committing to help Scouting get back on its feet in Goderich. They are collecting money to help the Goderich groups to replace equipment for the group and individuals in the group. During the month of October, they are asking all members of Scouting in Bluewater - youth and adult - to bring a loonie or twoonie to each meeting. The Area will present the money to the Goderich groups in November. The second way they are helping is by inviting a group from Goderich to participate in any camp they have over this scout year. This will relieve their leaders of the responsibility of trying to organize a camp, something that is not a priority for a leader trying to put his or her household back together. It will also give youth members a chance to get away and enjoy a "normal" weekend. In extending the invitation, be prepared to provide all equipment as some of our youth members lost everything they had. In the Brotherhood and Spirit of Scouting, any group in Mindaamin area that wishes to participate in aiding the Goderich groups to rebuild in the above mentioned ways or in any other way, please let me know as soon as possible. There is a Tri-Shores council Network team meeting on November 5th. I’d be happy to present Mindaamin’s contributions to the Goderich members at that meeting. Lets all pull together to help our fellow Scouts and show them that we are all part of the worldwide brotherhood of Scouting.
